Project for Modernization of Repositories for the Waste Nuclear Fuel of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant

On 23 March, the Commission of the Ministry of Nature Protection of the RA approved the positive decision concluded by the State Environmental Expertise on the Project for Modernization of Repositories for the Waste Nuclear Fuel of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant. It is planned by the Project to enlarge the existing repository with the aim of extending the waste fuel storage period up to 50 years. It was mentioned at the session that the waste fuel used to be sent to Russia. However, due to the heavy expenses, a decision was made according to which the fuel should be stored in situ unless the issue on its possible processing was settled.

At the same session the positive conclusion regarding “Nubarashen Landfill Gas Capture and Power Generation” Project submitted by the Japanese Corporation SHIMIZU, was approved, too.
