Armenia, Russia unveil plans for uranium venture

Russia and Armenia have announced plans to set up a joint venture to search for and extract uranium in Armenia, RFE/RL's Armenian Service reported.

Armenian Ecology Minister Vartan Ayvazyan and the head of Russia's Federal Atomic Energy Agency, Sergei Kiriyenko, made the announcement today in Yerevan.

Kiriyenko said Russian experts are prepared to travel to Armenia to begin work in 10 days.

Kiriyenko also said Russia is ready to help Armenia build new nuclear plants if Yerevan decides to develop its nuclear energy industry.
